The Girls

Then

Now

I've had the "girls" nearly a year now.  Tuesday will be a year since I adopted them.  They've grown so much and Edith (black calico) is continuing to grow.  Her particular breed (she's a dessert lynx mix) usually doesn't stop growing until they are two years old, while most domestic shorthair, like Lucy, usually stop after a year.  I think that Lucy (gray calico) is as big as she will get.  I'd originally planned to fly Edith back with me at Christmas.  It would have been a shorter trip and easier on her.  However, the apartment that I found does not allow pets.  This apartment will do for at least six months, and then I can start looking for something that will allow pets.  Regardless, Lucy will probably stay with my aunt who she likes more than me anyway.  Lucy is a bit of a scaredy cat.  She runs and hides from almost everyone.  Edith on the other hand demands everyone's attention, usually in hopes that they will give her food.  She likes to sit on my shoulders (and sometimes my head) as I have my morning coffee.

If HRH was still alive, I wouldn't have stopped until I found a place that allowed cats, but these girls have been around my aunt enough to be comfortable with her and quite honestly might just prefer her. I will miss them terribly, but for now, this is the choice I had to make.  I know they have a good home and will be well taken care of.  I will still miss them though, and they might miss me a little.  Lucy is completely indifferent to me, and Edith only thinks about food and playing.  So, it's quite possible that they won't miss me nearly as much as I will miss them.

I've heard that cats are more attached to their home than to their people. Don't know if it's true, but it's only a generalization, and could well have been started by a dog lover.

As a cat lover I can appreciate how hard it must be for you to leave your beloved cats behind. Joe. But I agree with naturgesetz that cats do get very attached to where they consider "home." Plus, the two of them have probably gotten used to living in each other's company. I hope it all works out for you.

When I moved here in 2007, I had my dog «Toby», 2yo mixed Shitsu-Poodle.

He adapted quite easily. For sure, he was used to go to my sister's home in Quebec city and each time he recognized the place and was at ease living there too..

I think that dogs adapt more easily than cats..
Not that cats cannot adapt too.. I have many example of that with some friends having cats and that moved in other houses...

Must say that my last attempt with «Thomas» 2yo serengeti cat I adopted on January 2014 wasn't a success..
He never adapt here and was even a bit agressive toward me...

I had to let him go... Too bad because he was a beauty..

SO, if I ever try another cat, I'll adopt a kitten..

As I said, there are exceptions...

Short version: they've become disposable now, they were o.k. when you felt lonely, and now: good riddance!

That is absolutely not the case. They are used to the house I currently live in, and I do not want to upset them more than necessary. They will stay in this house with my aunt. I had to find a place quickly and when I did find one, they wouldn't make an exception. After this winter when I am more used to driving in the snow, I will look for a place that does allow cats and Edith will move with me. Lucy had always been more my aunt's cat anyway, as she was the one who picked her out. The girls are most certainly not "disposable." They will merely stay in my old house with my aunt who they love. My point about HRH is that she was very old and was very attached to only me. I could not have left her because it would have killed her. The girls will be better off here until I can find a place for them up there.

To Anonymous: Short version: You are an Asshat.
It is obvious to anyone who can think, that Joe cares deeply about his two cats and would never leave them if he wasn't sure they would be well-cared for by his Aunt. The situation he has found himself in was clearly explained in his blog piece. Your comment was ridiculous and offensive to anyone who follows this blog and knows how deeply Joe has always felt for his sweet HRH, and Edith and Lucy. You should be ashamed of yourself.
And now: good riddance to you!

So sorry to hear about the cats. They are beauties!!!! I know how you feel, and one day soon they will rejoin you. I must have my dog! Our furry friends enrich our life so much, and love us no matter what and will always wait patiently for our return each day. No matter what mood I'm in when I get home, Buster always makes me laugh.

The girls are still adorable! I know they will enjoy being with your aunt and I know how hard it is to leave them. Just ignore Anon because some people are just miserable no matter what.
