And sometimes, they'll surprise you and love you right back, no matter what!

Happy Father's Day, Joe!

Peace <3
JayAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5356114186987252972.post-14734812001625168332014-06-15T12:22:40.388-04:002014-06-15T12:22:40.388-04:00Beautiful post, Joe. She eventually got over it. She welcomed my last partner with open arms, mostly, I think, because he was a nuclear physicist/lawyer. He favorite child became successful and married well. She doesn’t ever talk about my break-up. I hope your mother accepts the men in your life.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5356114186987252972.post-4969131956619191032014-06-15T09:08:59.167-04:002014-06-15T09:08:59.167-04:00[I removed earlier version because of a confusing ...[I removed earlier version because of a confusing typo. Third time's the charm, I hope!]

When I came out to my parents, they also asked that I not tell others in the family -- in particular, that I not tell my younger brother. (We were both way-adult and on our own at the time.) I agreed, but told them I would not lie. If he asked directly, I would tell the truth. My mother was not too happy, but she accepted my decision.

When my brother did ask -- just a couple of years later and in the context of explaining to him about the baptism he was considering -- I told him the truth and we had a great conversation. His wife and kids all accept me wholeheartedly. They also accept my husband, something my mother still struggles with. (My father died almost three years ago. He knew about my then-partner/now-spouse and semi-accepted it.)

My mother was completely floored by the reaction of my brother and his family. She could not imagine anyone taking it well. She had been convinced that it would crush my (then) teenaged nephew and nieces. Instead, they thought it was cool to have a gay uncle. I got the most supportive emails from them after they heard.

At any rate, I know not all instances of coming out go well. I hope the day soon comes when you will not have to conceal from anyone -- family, employers, government, clergy, anyone! -- your own truth as a loving and loved person.

Thanks for the post! I like it when people have a special post that gets repeated annually for a specific occasion.Michael Doddhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00942287172727040371noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5356114186987252972.post-88577256684725228512014-06-15T08:58:07.543-04:002014-06-15T08:58:07.543-04:00First time reader here.
