A friend of mine believes that the current idea of finding one's soul mate is what has really destroyed permanent heterosexual marriage and may eventually render the same disservice for same sex marriages. Her theory is that when couples run into difficulties, they quickly opt out because the partner must not be the real soul mate, else there would be no disagreements. Or one partner encounters another person who seems a better fit and who must be the real soul mate. And being with your soul mate is the most important thing. So people move from partner to partner, never finding the wholeness they seek -- because that can only be found within the depths of oneself.<br />Boy that sounded preachy!
