They have always feared that STIs would take soldiers out of commission. During WWI, the French military offered to open up brothels for the American servicemen, knowing that legal prostitution cut down on the amount of VDs, as they were called then. When Secretary of War Newton Baker heard about the offer, he responded, "For God's sake don't show this to the president or he'll stop the war." Wilson was a notorious prude. I guess my point is that I am not surprised that before you entered the military you had not heard much about HIV, as the government did very little to spread information in the early days of the epidemic, but it is no surprise to me that it was different in the military.

For many of mine and your generation, being late bloomers did save us. Then when we did "bloom," we were more cautious about HIV prevention. We had seen what it did to the gay community.Joehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05299122685163501819noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5356114186987252972.post-32676625190874355922021-03-18T15:29:09.201-04:002021-03-18T15:29:09.201-04:00I was born in 1957...I remember going into the Air...I was born in 1957...I remember going into the Air Force in 1984...Prior to going into the Air Force I was living under a rock and religious...I was regularly having sex with a married man in my church...I heard about this AIDS thing and was puzzled...I brought it up to the guy I was sleeping with...He said it didn't pertain to us...Like I was having sex left and right...He was my first...Moving forward...Basic training and my first assignment in Wiesbaden, Germany...The HIV/AIDS message was everywhere...It was like I went from the dark to the light...Here I was 27 and cautious of what I was doing sexually...It was something new and different...Then the military started tested regularly for HIV...This was around 1985...I suppose you can deduce that my late-blooming sexually may have saved me...VRCooperhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04067249175668802286noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5356114186987252972.post-4573473394416372682021-03-18T12:48:05.651-04:002021-03-18T12:48:05.651-04:00We also have legalized same sex «unions» or marria...We also have legalized same sex «unions» or marriages around 2003-2005.

But here the religious part of it wasn't at stake because we are less religious, mainly in Province de Québec. These unions served more the civilian part to protect the spouses in the legal part and enable some financial advantage that only hetero marriage had already.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-sex_marriage_in_Canada#Quebec_decisionJiELhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03290330475832440721noreply@blogger.com
