Rocking the Boat

Guys and Dolls was on TCM the other night.  I admit it, I love most musicals.  Guys and Dolls is no exception.  I particularly love this song.
Truth be told, sometimes we should sit down and stop “rocking the boat.”  Life can’t always be fair, but we have to make do with what we have sometimes.  However, there are certain things worth fighting for which calls for “rocking the boat.”  If we all are to treat others fairly and truthfully, we may rock the boat a little, but the world will be a better place.

    I, too, love musicals. Guys and Dolls is one of my favorites.

    I think that we do have to rock the boat sometimes. Unless everyone is all shook up, they don't pay attention to the main issue we rock the boat over: equality. It took rocking the bus in the 50's to eventually get equal rights (though still not totally equal treatment) for blacks. I hope that gay equality is coming - but until we have a Martin Luther King Jr. who's married to Rosa Parks, I fear it will be a slow road.

    Joe: What is it about musicals that makes us gays love them so much? OK, I realize not all gay guys like them, not our macho sports-loving bros -- but that's OK, we actually have a big tent that welcomes all.

    Jay and FOC: musicals are a great escape. My students laugh at me all the time because I will break out into song, but what's more fun than having a life that can be a musical, LOL.

    I got to see Stubby Kaye perform this on stage in a touring company of "Guys and Dolls." I also got to see him play the peddler in "Oklahoma." The guy sure knew how to grab the audience. I also got to see Stanley Hollaway as Alfred Dolittle in "My Fair Lady." These character leads could make or break a musical. Even as a kid of seven years, I was sexually aroused by many of the incredibly handsome chorus boys and juvenile leads. Maybe that's why I love musicals.

    Wow, Dean, you are so lucky. I would have loved to have seen Stubby Kaye in any of those roles. And "My Fair Lady" is one of my all time favorite musicals. Chorus boys, {swoon} LOL.
