Favorites

Occasionally at church and especially when we have a large crowd, our song leader sings his favorite songs, though they are supposed to be all our favorites.  Anytime I have to lead the singing, we always do favorites, because those are the songs I know well enough to lead.  It's been a long tiring weekend, and I thought I might do something similar, which is post my three favorite bible verses.

Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

Matthew 7:12

Judge not, that ye be not judged.  For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

Matthew 7:1-3

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Philippians 4:13

If you know me or regularly read my posts about religion, then it should come as no surprise to you that these verses mean the most to me.  They make up my key philosophy in life.

What is you favorite scripture? Why?

  2. luke 17:20-21

    The Coming of the Kingdom

    Once Jesus was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God was coming, and he answered, ‘The kingdom of God is not coming with things that can be observed; nor will they say, “Look, here it is!” or “There it is!” For, in fact, the kingdom of God is among you.’

    Micah 4:1-5

    4In days to come
    the mountain of the Lord’s house
    shall be established as the highest of the mountains,
    and shall be raised up above the hills.
    Peoples shall stream to it,
    2 and many nations shall come and say:
    ‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
    to the house of the God of Jacob;
    that he may teach us his ways
    and that we may walk in his paths.’
    For out of Zion shall go forth instruction,
    and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
    3 He shall judge between many peoples,
    and shall arbitrate between strong nations far away;
    they shall beat their swords into ploughshares,
    and their spears into pruning-hooks;
    nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
    neither shall they learn war any more;
    4 but they shall all sit under their own vines and under their own fig trees,
    and no one shall make them afraid;
    for the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken.

    The reason for the Luke reading being important for me is that it reminds me that God is among us, within us, and when we recognize that fully we revere our fellow humans as children of God.

    The reading from Micah describes an ideal world without war, where different people and faiths are tolerated and none live in fear. It is as beautiful a vision today as it was 2,800 years ago.

  3. Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future full of hope."

    Because it can be easy to lose sight of hope in the world, and too easy to believe/hear that the divine (whatever that may mean to you) plan tends toward punishment and not toward love.

  4. Mark 12:30-31

    The Greatest Commandment
    …30 AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.' 31 "The second is this, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' There is no other commandment greater than these."

  5. My favorite is Jabez's prayer. It sounds off how I want to start my day and end it, with God's blessing.

  6. A good friend of mine once shared this verse with me. "... Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for The Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9
