Getting Settled

Moving would be a lot more fun if these guys had been there to help, but as it is I'm just taking it slow, bringing a few things in at a time.  It's a lot of work to move into a second floor apartment all by yourself.  Most of my furniture should be delivered on Wednesday and Thursday.  I'm not sure when the cable will be installed but hopefully soon (I might go crazy without TV and Internet).  I have to call them back today, assuming they aren't closed for Columbus Day.  I hope that by this time next week, I'll be settled in, since a week from today is my official start date at my new job.

  1. Go cold turkey...leave off the TV...Best thing you will do as you begin your new life....keep the internet so you can stay connected with all of us.....Glad you are in at last!!!

  2. You have to think of moving into a second-floor apartment on your own as part of God's plan to help you with YOUR plan to get in better shape, Joe. :)

Good luck with all the many and unending details that you want done immediately so your place can start to feel like a home. I'm so happy you have a week's lead time for all this before your job begins. Take care.

  3. I stole that image to use when Tom and I move into our Madison apartment later in the year. We do plan to hire "Two Guys with a Truck" to do the heavy lifting, but I am reasonably sure neither guy will look anything like that. And since we will be moving in a Wisconsin December-January, even if they did, shirtless ain't gonna happen.

  4. That's good news and just take it easy with your cable issue....
Take time to breathe and see real life around you in your new location.

I also moved in a second floor apartment on April 2007 here in Montreal. But I had lot of help from my friends and my eldest son..
    Mostly my gay friends here...

What I know for having moved numerous times in my life it's that it takes at least one year to have a place really well settled... So, do the most important things and let time ajust to your new home...

I'm eager to hear you talk about your new work and new friends there...

It's a new life and new adventure.

Friendly yours from near by Montréal..

  5. As long as you can eat, sleep, and get your mail, and bathe every few days, you should be fine. Obviously you have some way of getting to the internet, which is good. I hope everything else gets set up to your satisfaction eventually, if not sooner.

  6. If you had those guys helping you, that wouldn't be the only thing getting "done"!

  7. So glad you're there. I think anyone who picks up and moves to a totally new place is incredibly brave. I have so much admiration for your boldness.

  8. Don't overdo it and enjoy the time you have off before work starts. It can be do stressful moving. But it's always worth it. A new job and state to live in...what an adventure! :)

  9. A nice glass of chilled red wine and 15 minutes of peace just to sit and think of what an awesome adventure you are about to start.
I am reminded of a short poem by Robert Frost.. You might enjoy this.

    Being Chosen Poet of Vermont

Breathes there a bard who isn't moved
When he finds his verse is understood
    And not entirely disapproved
By his country and his neighborhood?

  11. Go out and explore your new town!!! What are your observations? What is there to do?

I'm curious to hear your initial observations when you went up there and saw this town during your interview. What clicked and made you say this was a place you could live?
