Dear Joe, Trumps' withdrawal from the WHO is both exemplary of and a contribution to the "catastrophic decline in the US' standing as a world power." Nothing is gained by the withdrawal, apart from puerile self-satisfaction thro' the exercise of spite, and the act just makes the country more isolated from and less capable of influencing other world powers. Roderick
Roderick, I agrees with you. Trump seems to be doing everything he can to isolate us from the world and destroy the US as a country all for his own narcissism. The Republicans have been moving closer and closer to isolationism since George W Bush became president in 2000. The invasion of Iraq without sufficient allies and backing from foreign powers was just the first step and was the beginning of the Republican Party’s adversarial relationship with the UN. This is just another step in their xenophobia and hatred of peace and unity around the world. Trump has gone even further by being a lapdog of Putin and now with his withdrawal from the WHO. Sadly, the United States has become a laughingstock of the world because of the Republican Party.
It’s time for the Grand Old Party to either be reformed or done away with completely. Their strength lies in stoking the weakness and fears of Americans. When will this country wake up? Because of the Republicans, the League of Nations failed and could not prevent the fascist threat and aggression. They tried to keep us out of WWII altogether, but could not deny the attack on Pearl Harbor. The GOP has been the party of corruption since Lincoln’s assassination. Grant, Hayes, Garfield, Harding, Nixon, Reagan, Bush II, and Trump have all had corrupt administrations. The Republican Party must be stopped in the election in November. I’d like to see them defeated so badly in the 2020 election that they would never and could never recover.
