I miss playing golf. I played on the golf team in high school, which is when I learned to play. I thought it would be a good skill if I became a lawyer, which was my original career ambition. I loved playing, even if I was never very good at it. It was still fun. It's been a decade or more since I have played. My favorite golf course used to be the 9-hole "Deer Haven" course at the Roland Cooper State Park in Camden, Alabama. It used to be a beautiful course that ran along the Alabama River.

Moment of Zen: Golf

I too like to play golf sometimes.
ReplyDeleteWent on golf courts since I was a teenager to be a caddy for my uncle Julien.
Then after I played golf myself.
Saddly, I neve saw those three first on any golf places... LOL!!
They surely know how to play with their golf clubs and balls..
Joe, what else in the town beside the golf course does Camden have going for it? The Wikipedia entry is not what you might call "upbeat". Thinking of you and sending you good vibes (but they won't reach Vermont!), Roderick
ReplyDeleteRoderick, there is nothing else in Camden to recommend. The only other thing I remember about it is that the town contains Wilcox Academy, a school we used to compete against, and Larry's Drive-In. Back when I was in school, Larry's was the only place to eat in town. Camden is a whole lot of nothing and other than Roland Cooper State Park, the only thing it has is that it was the birthplace of Hank Aaron. If I were to tell someone to go anywhere in that part of Alabama, I'd say to visit Monroeville, as it was the basis of the town of Maycomb, AL, in To Kill a Mockingbird. They still reenact the book as a play at the courthouse which was the model for the courthouse in the movie. And if you went to Monroeville, you'd have to eat at David's Catfish House, which was Harper Lee's favorite restaurant (other than Hardees for breakfast).
ReplyDeleteHowever, if anyone is serious about golf in Alabama, while the state parks have cheap and decent golf courses, I highly suggest the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Truly beautiful golf courses.
A bit late with this response. Thanks for the info. on Camden. I see that Wilcox Academy has 278 students of whom 276 are white - 'nuff said. And alas! my father played golf and I had to follow him around the course - so boring as to turn me off the game for life. Roderick
ReplyDeleteRoderick, you’re right about Wilcox Academy. Though they have more students than I thought,. The horrible little school I taught at had basically the same demographics. It’s sad these kids don’t get more diversity in their lives. The school I attended from K4-12 had no minorities. The only good thing is that these small segregation academies are going out of business. One or two close almost every year in Alabama. They try to keep tuition low so that the white trash don’t have to go to the public schools with the “undesirables,” but the old racist bastards who originally established these schools are dying out and the money is drying up. They try to operate from the money brought in by athletics not tuition, but one shitty coach and attendance drops at games and they find themselves underwater. Eventually, only the most exclusive ones will survive and often they are at least a bit more racially diverse. Until these schools are gone, the South is going to remain a racist, narrow minded, homophobic region. Education is the only key to new ideas. Sorry, I got off on a bit of a rant.
