New Year’s
I wrote out a post last night asking about what little I did for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. However, it disappeared, and I was in no mood to write it all over again. Basically, my plans for New Year’s Eve fell through, watched football instead, and on New Year’s Day, I cooked my traditional meal of collard greens, black eye peas, ham, and cornbread. There was actually little preparation to be done, which is a good thing because I had a terrific migraine all day. I had written more than just that, but instead of recreating what I’d written before, I’m going to ask the questions I ended that post with. What did you do New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day? Do you have any New Year’s traditions and do they have any special meaning?

Yesterday I watched a concert from Paris. It was a performance of three works of Hector Berlioz: the "Grande symphonie funèbre et triomphale" op. 15, the cantata "Le chant des chemins de fer" op. 19 no. 3 and the cantata "L'Impériale" op. 26 :-)
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year and welcome back home to Vermont. New England has had warmer than usual weather while you were away, and while each day is projected to get a little colder, it looks like Boston will see daily highs in the low 50s through Wednesday so hopefully some of that unseasonably warm weather will work its way up to VT and you can enjoy it (migraine-free).
ReplyDeleteDid nothing I had to look after my stray cat Sunshine the fireworks here were dreadful, yesterday it was just the two of us and the cat, glad to see the back of last year and hope for better things this year.
ReplyDeleteMay I ask you a question about your blog?
ReplyDeleteI get a glimpse of a German Blackletter text behind your homepage. What is it?
Capricornus, I’d not know what the text is. When I set up this blog years ago, I chose the blogger template “Literate.” The original background was bookshelves filled wi5 books. I decided to use one of Bloggers different background images and saw this one and liked it. I may have figured out years ago what it is from, but I no longer remember. It’s basically just generic old German text with gothic style writing that Blogger uses for its templates.
ReplyDeleteThe homepage on my phone for your blog has bookshelves. I don't have any German on mine.
ReplyDeleteJimNS, the mobile version only uses the default which is the books. Apparently, you can’t change the mobile version of the theme.
ReplyDeleteThanks Joe. The background doesn't make any difference to me, just the blogger. 🙂
DeleteTrying to remember back that far.
ReplyDeleteNYE got the usual weekly phine call from brother in Tokyo, chatted about his son, d-i-l, and grandson who are visiting him and his wife from Brooklyn, and what they're doing for NYD. eventually made dinner of tenderloin steak & baked potato. Listened to classical music station. Dozed intermittently after midnight @ finally went to bed.
NYD went to church as usual. Had scrambled eggs w/ ham and English muffin w/ orange marmalade for breakfast (sorta traditional). Napped, spent time on facebook, twitter, and a chat site. Lamb chops for dinner.
So, nothing extraordinary. Starting 2023 on an even keel.
One other thing: I had ordered a new Harris Tweed jacket, and it arrived on NYE, so I wore it for the first time when I went to church on NYD.
In Marseilles, at midnight, the boats activate their sirens https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3y1AaI3t-E . This year I heard nothing: I was sleeping.
