Hi Joe! And now for something entirely different (since I want to banish Trump from my mind into outer darkness). So here goes. What is your opinion about the Ole Miss football team, or don't you have any? Roderick

Roderick, the only thing good I will say about Ole Miss football is that John Rhys Plumlee is one of the hottest football players out there at the moment. Plumlee also is a centerfielder for the Ole Miss baseball team, and I do have a thing for baseball players. Plumlee, though, grew up in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and attended Oak Grove High School, where he also played baseball and football. I’m assuming he wanted to go to an SEC school and get out of Hattiesburg, but I really wish that he’d stayed home and gone to my alma mater. I went to grad school at USM. We have a much better baseball team than Ole Miss.

As a USM alumni, I’m pretty much obligated to hate Ole Miss and Mississippi State as they treat Southern Miss as they ugly step sister. Mississippi State finally started playing Southern Miss in football again, but the two schools had refused to play USM for many years because we often used to beat them and for many years we had a stronger team than either Ole Miss or Mississippi State. That has changed in recent years, but I’m still prejudiced against Ole Miss.

I bet that’s a more detailed answer than you expected, LOL. And if you were in front of me, you’d likely hear a lot more about my dislike of Ole Miss.

Joe, no - the response was great. It made me google "John Rhys Plumlee." A bit heavy set and will soon put on weight. Anyone who can introduce his Twitter with "Christian" and then go on to show himself wolfing down a sandwich and being in a homoerotic embrace with the team coach (on the grounds that the team is "family" ha! ha!) seems to be odd. But of course "Christian" means nastily hetero. I also googled "Hattiesburg" - not somewhere I would be comfortable living - but then I am not a Southerner (as should be obvious). Roderick

Roderick, I lived in Hattiesburg for nearly ten years. It is by leaps and bounds the most progressive city in Mississippi, though that may not be saying much. However, I felt comfortable enough and accepted enough to be able to be out and proud in Hattiesburg. I’m not sure that would be true anywhere else in Mississippi. I don’t know when or if I’d have ever come out if I had not moved to Mississippi. I met some wonderful friends there. My best friend, in fact, also graduated from Oak Grove. Even though I was a dirt poor graduate student in those years, they were my formative years as a gay man, which was made possible by my friends there.

That being said, things could have changed in the last ten years, but one thing I am pretty certain has not changed is Hattiesburg has some fantastic eating places. It may not be New Orleans or famous for its cuisine, but Leatha's Barbeque is some of the best you’ll find anywhere and people drive hours just to eat at her little restaurant. Of course, there is also the Crescent City Grill and the Purple Parrot. Oh do I miss the food of Hattiesburg! It’s also known as the Hub City for a reason, it’s just over an hour to five (six if you differentiate Biloxi and Gulfport) cities in different directions: New Orleans, Mobile, Biloxi/Gulfport, Jackson, and Meridian.

As for Plumlee, Oak Grove High School produced most of the gay men I “knew” in South Mississippi. Just saying...
