We are expecting our first major snowfall today. They are predicting 4-8” but a lot of it may be slushy snow which is the worst in my opinion. It’s heavy and hard to clean off my car or drive in. I’m feeling a bit under the weather. I think I’m getting a cold. I wish I could just stay home today, but that’s not an option. My appointment to get my snow tires put on is today and if I were to cancel, it would be another month before they could do it, so come hell or high water, I’m getting my tires changed today. I’d wait at the place while they do it, but they don’t have a waiting area anymore. They did away with it during the pandemic. So, my boss is going to pick me up and take me to the museum where I will likely feel miserable all day. I hate feeling like this.

Yes, be prepared for that Vermont weather. I love the snow. But I don't want North Dakota/Michigan...snow. I don't mind driving in it BUT I worry most about others. Folks drive crazy especially if they have a 4 x 4.
I don't know how far the tire place is but don't you have Lyft/Uber. I use Lyft for my car repairs. By the way, do you have a set of tires for winter and then another set for the rest of the year? When I lived in DC we had folks that had snow tires and you could hear them coming a mile away.
I did put my snow winter tires on November 9.
In Province of Québec you have to put them from December 1 to April 1 unless you might have a police ticket.
My snow tires have their own rims as my summer tires have some mag rims. Easier to change them. Also all my 8 tires are filled with nitrogen gaz which makes them not sensitive to temperature change and pervents the tires to blow up in hot temperatures.
This snow will melt as the temperature is over 32°F in Montreal.
Ski stations like the one north of Montreal in St Sauveur is already open as it's located in the Laurentian mountains.
Maybe same in Vertmont like where you are Joe.
We had record highs all over Vermont just last week, uvdp. It got up to 76°F in some places.
VRCooper, there are very few Lyft/Uber drivers where I live in Vermont. Burlington has them, but not in my neck of the woods. I have a set of summer tires and a set of winter tires. My summer tires need to be replaced, so I will get new ones in the spring. As for hearing the snow tires, you can hear them here if they have studded tires. I don't get the studded tires because I have good roads to drive on. If I lived on one of the mountains or on an unpaved road, I would need them.
JiEL, Vermont doesn't have a requirement that you have winter tires, but most people do. On days like this, it's hard to go anywhere without them. Our ski resorts are ready to open up, but they haven't had enough snow. Killington, VT has a big ski competition that's part of the Ski World Cup at the end of the month, and they have been really worried about not having enough snow or it being cold enough for the artificial snow.
This is really late in the year for our first snow, and it was a lot of snow for the first time. Usually, the first snow just covers the ground and goes away, but this is a lot more snow than that. The sad thing is, if something is not done to slow global warming, the ski industry in Vermont won't exist in 25 years. The season will be too short to make it economically viable.

I live in Denver so the snow pattern is such that it will snow-a good one-stay on the ground for a few days and melt away. We just had our first snow a few days ago. By midday, the roads were like nothing happened and the rooftops were still covered in snow. This week in Denver it has been hovering in the 30s. We are expecting about an inch or more of snow within the next 24 hours-Thursday-60% of snow. What I tell folks is Denver may have snow in the mountains but the front has to clear the mountains and move East into Denver. By then the chance of snow is reduced.
I have lived in North Dakota, Michigan, DC, and Virgina so I am used to snow. I visited Chicago once and I loved it But I would hate to live there and experience the "lake effect." That is where the winds blow off the frozen lake. I hear it is brutal. Chicago has a big city feel with a Midwestern sensibility.
You are right about climate change. To hear the fossil fuel industry tell it, we should just proceed as usual with our heads in the sand. The United States should be a lot further along in electric cars, alternative energy, and such. See what happens when we let big industry control things. We have 10%-spitballing here-have their say for the rest of us. Hell, we had electric cars in the early 1900s. The battery life was crap but it was a start and a foundation to build upon. I am originally from California and wind energy is big in Palm Springs if you drive around Nevada and the surrounding areas you will see large solar panel farms.

As for snow here, today's snow will probably melt and be gone in a few days, but probably the next big snow will be here for good. We'll be covered in snow until late-April/early-May. I love the snow when it first falls, but then it gets nasty and ugly until the next snowfall covers up the gray slush.
Wet snow is the worst. A half inch of slush is fairly easy to push away, but a foot or more of wet show is the worst. If I have to shovel it, I make manageable cubes with my shovel and toss them — recreational shoveling I call it, and I only do it for short periods, not over 1/2 hour at a time.
