I considered writing about what has been making my life so stressful the last few days, but I’ve made the decision to not talk much about my job anymore. The whole thing that’s happened has pissed me off more than anything else. I now know for certain that I work with a couple of “malcontents.” I can do my job without them. It would be nice if we could work together as a team, but they have made it clear that they are not team players. Thankfully, I will be the only one working today.
I know I am damn good at my job. I get told regularly by people I work with outside the museum how much they enjoy/appreciate/are impressed with the job I do. I get the same response from my boss, who is the only opinion at the museum that matters. I have a little over three weeks of vacation I need to take before the end of May, so for the next six weeks or so, I will be there when my job requires me to be, but otherwise, I'm going to enjoy my time off.
I have no plans to go anywhere or really do much of anything. I really don't have the spare cash to do so. However, I can enjoy spending my days with Isabella, even if all she will do is wake me up at 5 am and sleep away the rest of the day. I might just take follow her example and take some cat naps myself.

Time away from those malcontents will do you a world of good, even if that time away is spent at home doing as you wish and relaxing.

Maybe you can do day trips on some of your vacation days: places like the Coolidge and the *much grander) Robert Lincoln homes, if you haven't already visited them; or other tourist traps.
You might also want to take a week or so at a time when the malcontents will wish you were there to help them out. Maybe they might appreciate you more. But, as you say, what really matters is that the boss knows how good you are.
I might go to Coolidge's homestead, naturgesetz. I have never been. I have been to Hildene, Robert Lincoln's house. It is quite spectacular. There are some Robert Frost sites too, if I'm not mistaken. I probably will do some day trips. There are a few places in Vermont that I have wanted to see but just never took the time. I will likely go to the Atheneum in St. Johnsbury at some point to see some of the wonderful art there.
Joe, it’s a good idea not to talk too much about your job on a public site. So I totally agree with you about that. These comments are there forever and could haunt you one day when you are the head of a big museum.

My suggestion for next year is to plot out your days off in advance for the year. This way you will not be done to the wire in use or loose state. Yes, the days off are flexible but it ensures you take the time off you desire. The American work ethic compared to European is lacking. When I was in the military we had a German civilian worker augmenting our floor in the hospital. Our ward clerk was gone, I swear, 6 months out of the year. With her German holidays, military holidays, vacation... She was always out for extended periods of time. Americans are finally rethinking the work week. There is strong talk about 4 days a week. Now granted some occupations can't do without effort.
Yes, working with folks can be a challenge. Document EVERYTHING.
This current trend to treat work like FAMILY is for the birds. Yes, a smaller workplace could stretch it to fit BUT overall folks are always looking out for themselves. Don't get me started on women working with women. I have seen the ill effects firsthand and it is not pretty.
