Just Two More Days

So far, this week at work has been rough. I expected a lot of catching up after being out on emergency medical leave, but I didn’t expect the added challenge of my boss being openly—or at least quietly—hostile about it. It’s not always outright confrontation, but her demands and unwillingness to even discuss accommodations have been deeply disappointing. She’s also requesting documentation that, according to my physical therapist, should only come from HR. I’ll have to tell her that today, which I’m sure will be another fun conversation.

The whole situation has triggered a lot of anxiety and deepened the depression I was already feeling from the fact that my pain doesn’t seem to be getting any better. Part of that, I think, is because of how far I’ve had to walk from our temporary parking lot. Our usual lot is closed for repairs, and the longer walk from the temporary lots has been rough. The lot is supposed to reopen tomorrow, so I asked to move my work-from-home day from Friday to Wednesday to help reduce the strain. She refused.

When I tried to find another solution—asking her to address the problem of our two museum-reserved parking spaces being used by people who aren’t even patrons—she told me to take it up with her boss. It felt less like “couldn’t” and more like “wouldn’t,” but I did as she said. Thankfully, he actually took action, going out to take pictures of the cars parked there and contacting campus security. He’s dealt with severe back pain himself, though for him walking brought relief. I explained that for me, it’s the opposite—every extra step makes the pain worse.

There are other issues I could get into, but honestly, I’m too tired to go into detail. I just hope today is a better day, and I hope all of you have a good one too.

I just need to survive two more days.

That's awful. She is showing a lot of hostility over an injury and is unwilling to work with you. If it gets worse, file a complaint with HR. Her boss seems understanding and good for him for taking action. Filing a complaint would get his attention. Of course, I don't know your workplace and am offering blind advice. You shouldn't be treated this way though.

Could your doctor (or physical therapist - not sure about your state laws) do the paperwork for you to get a temporary handicapped placard? Might be worth the effort with the back situation? I don't think it's a huge expense or whatever (again I don't know about your state or town regulations...)

I just sent an email to HR about this. It was not exactly a complaint, but it was a sort of very polite WTF over how HR is handling this and my boss's request.

The thing about the handicap placard is this: the handicap spaces that are available are on the opposite side of the building from the employee entrance where the alarm system is located. There are two employee handicap parking spaces, but there is an excavator blocking both spaces and that area is closed to vehicles because of a water main issue that has eroded the ground underneath making it unsafe for parking. All of this is so frustrating.

Don't let this discourage you. Come work in France, it's easier for social security and illness!

I really wish I could, but someone would need to teach me French. I'm barely literate in Spanish. However, if you know of a museum that needs an English speaking curator of education, let me know.

Yes, uvdp, I was once told by a stripper in Montreal who was from Toronto, “The French here is so ugly. French is as beautiful language, but not here in Quebec.” πŸ˜‚

Not knowing French at all, I wouldn’t know if it was ugly or not. It all sounds the same to me.

Keep your ears and eyes peeled for work elsewhere. But have a job to go to before quitting. In the meantime, endure, suck it up till your head blows off or your leg gets better. TENS?

It sounds like she has put you in her sights. What's next? Performance Improvement Plan? Be very cautious and document everything for potential lawsuit.

Joe said...

Oh, she's planning to rewrite my job description. That's what's coming next.

Been there, done that. Got demoted but when they realized they needed me, up the ladder I went. In one incident I refused to be a team player. It went against my beliefs. Try not to C - but B+. A positive outlook can turn yourself around and then others. Watch out for those Canucks on Lake Champlain. The Vermont Senator tried to ease their concerns about Trump.

Let's make sure we get our ducks in a row just in case----I have dealt with many employees with FMLA and work restrictions----I have always created a wall between me and the employee----I take all my ques from HR----I don't want to hear anything about it from the employee----Though some tell me everything----Make sure you follow-up any conversation with your boss via email----Saying something like " I just want to summerize our conversation today to ensure we are on the same page...."----Something like that----Make sure you follow all guidelines from your physician to a tee----Also, make sure you complete all follow-up paperwork timely----I had one employee shrug off HR for updated documents----HR called me----I just did it slyly like----"How are you doing today? Talk, Talk..."Make sure you submit all updated documents when requested....." In this case, HR closed her case, and she was without protection----Many managers hate FMLA / work restrictions becasue it is something they have to keep track of and extra duties----That's just the way it is----Your boss being hostile does not bode well for her if she tries to let you go----Just document everthing----And to repeat, followup every conversation with an email to have a record of the conversation and won't allow her to twist things----It's all part of being a manager----Hell, I tell the story of one of my employees in a very delicate job who fell and broke both of her elbows---That put a twist on me as a manger----I couldn't get mad----I just had to make it work----It was rough----Nothing but the best----
